go w/ a SIM card-based provider/GSM network. 3G will be wide-spread in the US soon enough and you will want that. also for int'l coverage, it is a standard.
i really, really loved TMobile when i lived in DC and had it prior to there as well. i personally found the coverage superb, customer service fantastic. traveling as much as i did made it great to. pluse, they are the only provider that will unlock your mobile device, let alone free of charge and help you do it.
i use cingular now and do like it. when in large urban areas, the 3G coverage is awesome.
