if the drive is physically broken, there are means available that require it being rebuilt in new hardware and spun up very carefully.
little, simple sorftware ain't gonna cut it in those situations....

(Apr 12 07, 11:26)but unfortunately most people have no way of knowing if that is the case or not. would it not be best to try the simple means first before immediately sending it off? i doubt any data recovery firm ever told a potential client they had a problem that they could fix themselves with cheap software
