the visa situation isn't easy. i'm in new york having moved from london at the start of the year. only got a six month business visa and still work for a london agency, get paid in £ and pay UK taxes. I was just lucky enough to have a boss that let me move here for a girl.
h1-b visas are your best bet for a more permanent move. you need to get a move on though, they become available in April and go fast. but there is work here in NY and plenty companies willing to sponsor talent.
it's a great city, although as yolo said, can be quite lonely if you don't know anyone. thats not enough of a reason not to do it if you can though.
