A black girl commented on my Irn-Bru purchase in the shop beforehand "What, do you love that stuff, or something?", to which I responded in a very English accent "Well, of course - it's a Scottish thing" and then as I was walking out the door, followed up with "..I mean, look at my hair - it's my lifeblood, isn't it?", to which she flashed a quizzical grin.
Quite made my moment (she was pretty cute, I thought). It was only as I walked down the street I realised she would probably have interpreted my parting line as "it's me life, blood, innit?", which probably settled in her conscious as either a retarded racial slur or a spastic attempt to ingratiate myself with street culture.
After 7-odd years in London, I've still not quite come to terms with the wider multicultural world out there.
