i don't know what it's like in the states, but in the UK we have the dreaded 'health and safety executive' ensuring worker safety and standards. Paint fumes likely contravene a number of regulations, and you shouldn't have to put up with them.
Your boss calling you out surely knows he has no right to demand you stay there, which is why he's relying on that whole male jock thing.
Suggest that you suspect it's illegal, and they'll belt up.
I've done this in the past - with a faulty copier spewing ozone, after a demi-fumigation and to get new window blinds that actually blinded sunlight, instead of me.
