Well, it's a demographics problem as well - you had a huge population explosion in the middle east, and no viable society to provide them with outlets for power and financial stability in those cultures - so they do what large groups of young men have always done in history - become radicalized and turn to violence. The West did the same thing, except we did it with millions dying on the battle fields of France in WWI
