98 - 01 were very bad years for the Jetta. Granted, they didn't get any better after that, but they were AS bad.
I really, REALLY hope you got the extended warranty or look online for warranty companies.
Biggest issues: oil sludge. If you see the "Oil Pressure Low" light - STOPDRIVING asap. Have it towed to dealership where they will rebuild the motor for free if warrantied or for 2100 if not warrantied. Oh and pray that the window motors and coils have been replaced already. =[
