Inside the breifcase was actually a soul.
If you'll notice (I can't remember the guys name off hand) but the big black guy has a bandaid on the back of his head/neck. Illuding to his soul being stolen that way. Various tales talk about a persons soul being stold a certain way. This was one of those ways.
When they opened it and said 'is that what i think it is?' it's a soul.
I read it in an article a while ago. Some very cool concepts in that movie.
