the current design is well, is like a jigsaw. On a 1024 x 768 screen the header and left and right hand navs take up so much room that the content area is like 100px newspaper column.
I had a whole buch of functional problems with the design as well as advice such as "dont use photos behind nav text" but they invited the original design company to the meeting and they tried to defend everything.
