The Classroom in a Book series for Adobe isn't too bad, as are the Total Training guides. They will act to some degree as a desk reference, but are more designed for training novices or un-trained enthusiasts.
The Total Training books are good in that they include a DVD with quicktime exercise files and content, and give you projects to complete throughout the course of the book.
They're two of the more popular titles I see getting sold in my folks' bookshop... hope that helps...
