I did some photography courses at university, we did a few projects dealing with food. I really didnt have the patience for it. Lot of work goes into a good shoot. I sucked :(
There are a lot of tricks you can do. Pick foods with strong colours, you can use a spray bottle of oil to make things look shiney. Undercook food slightly. Use that adhesive spray glue on glass, then spray water to get a bead effect....there are tons more just google.
Soft lighting works best. You can actually get some cool results with just natural light in your kitchen through a window if thats were you're shooting from.
