i totally blame schools for any negative side effects, they don't have to remove the holiday but keep that matter out of school, at least don't dedicate multiple projects in class to it.
I did know my dad, crap story in fact, he died the day before my birthday, 6 year olds aren't supposed to have to deal with death.
