Lots of book fans on QBN. Are any of you on Goodreads?

A lot of you have excellent taste in reading materials and it would be nice to get some recommendations.
CSS layout question Jul 26, 09, 7:59 p.m.
As shown below, I have a two column layout with an irregular-shaped image that must be positioned flush with the page bottom and overlaying the right column.
I've set the z-index to 1, which accomplished the overlay, but I cannot seem to get it flush with the bottom.

Sam Maloof May 27, 09, 8:48 a.m.
I just learned this morning that Sam Maloof, a modern day legend among furniture designers and craftsmen, passed away last Thursday.
In my opinion, he was the quintessential artisan—extremely talented, original and he always presented himself as the perfect gentleman. Thanks for setting the bar high, Mr. Maloof.
Probably best known for this style of rocker:

The link below contains a player that will play sound that can generally only be heard by those under 25 years of age.
In true asshole fashion it has been used to deter kids from hanging out. It's no wonder the young dislike the old.
Confirm or deny?

I'm very interested in hearing what you think.
2008: A Personal Summary Dec 31, 08, 9:02 a.m.
What's your personal take on 2008? What did you accomplish? Where did you fall short? Any one defining event of the year for you? Let's hear it.
Split video Dec 23, 08, 10:25 a.m.
Any recommendations on the easiest way to pull a couple of clips from a video? It's, say, five minutes in length and I need to grab three 30 second clips from it.
I have it in .WMV and can convert it to a variety of formats. Lots of freeware tools available via Google, but I thought I'd check here before downloading anything.

Virtual Vinyl Nov 19, 08, 6:35 a.m.
I love CDs. When I find music I like I buy the disc. Purchasing downloads leaves me feeling like I didn't get anything for my money. Nothing to hold, nothing to fit into its own alphabetized slot in the CD rack. And no album art! Such a great part of the music buying experience, IMO.
Roadrunner Records takes a stab at providing a digital version of the liner notes by creating a minisite for Cradle of Filth's new release, "Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder". They call it "virtual vinyl".
I like the artwork. I hate that you have to search blindly for the link to the lyrics. All-in-all a weak online effort, but it is interesting to see a record company address this element of their product.
Oh, and I'm still sticking with the physical copy.

Custom vs. Hosted Solution Feb 29, 08, 5:08 a.m.
There are plenty of industry-specific Web solutions available for, say, auto dealerships, realtors, etc.
When trying to help a client decide which option is the best fit for them (custom vs. hosted), what are some questions you would ask?
Note, this is not to 'sell' them either way, but a means of determining which avenue best suits their business.
Raceless Jan 25, 08, 1:33 p.m.
I was listening to the Stephen A. Smith show today and he was commenting on the Tiger Woods/Lynching Comment/Golf Week Noose. At one point he stated that this country loves you, "as long as you're raceless."
This morning, while getting my son ready for school, we were discussing Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and the Civil Rights movement. I was explaining why it's so important to pay attention to and learn from these people and that time in our country's history, and that racism continues to be an ongoing problem.
I went on that, "that's why, around here, we treat everyone the same. We don't care about skin color, whether they're tall or short, fat or skinny; it doesn't matter." Etc., etc., and more along the lines of distilling race down to a non-issue.
So my question, global and diverse QBN community: Is there merit in teaching 'racelessness'? Are there detriments I'm overlooking? My personal approach has always been to purposely look beyond race, and I'd never looked at that as anything but a positive, solid approach.

Underhanded SEO Jan 10, 08, 6:11 p.m.
I had a holding page up for a site while it was in development. The site went live and the owner searched Google for the company name.
The results are the page title and description, but the URL is for another (unrelated) company.
Checking the "cached" version of the page reveals that someone copied the logo from the holding page, the page title, and the metadata to a page on their site, then submitted it to, at least one, search engine.
First, I don't understand the benefit of someone doing this.
Second, can I assume that following general SEO protocol will have this squared away in relatively short order?
Oh yeah, and "fuck you" to the cheating asshole that did that.
