QBN Typecase: Passing the Torch

Clarifications:

1. The Typecase is an idea I pitched to QBN two years ago. After a Newstoday redesign in June '05, QBN launched the Typecase and graciously provided the space and the freedom to do whatever I wished with the column.

2. As I am clearly biased toward FontShop, many of my links pointed to FontShop.com. No money changed hands, but obviously these links were of financial benefit to FS. QBN and FS agreed to a time limit for this relationship. That milestone has now passed.

3. I wish Veer all the best in their new position as the Typecase sponsor. I no longer contribute any graphics or reviews to the column.

4. The decision to replace the archived content was QBN's. These past reviews will soon be published at Typographica, along with new reviews:

4. I wish Newstoday the best, and while I won't be around as often as I used to, I think this place is grand and have great respect for QBN. I was treated fairly.

Writing reviews and creating specimens for the Typecase was a joy. Thank you for reading my drivel over the past year.

Invoice designs

Most designers I know create their invoices with Quickbooks or some other accounting app with its lame print feature. Sure, you can change the font and do some minor layout adjustment, but they don't allow enough customization to really round out a design firm's identity. Who here designs their own invoices? Show samples please!

< Adobe Cheese

That new CS3 site is visually appealing (in a lowest-common-denom sort of way), and very smooth, but the poor product and marketing managers must have taken some pretty bad acting direction. They all seem very stiff and/or corny. The result is something not too far from QVN/infomercialland.

Font Widget

So there are already widgets that display installed fonts,

http://www.apple.com/downloads/d…

but what would you like to see in a widget from a font vendor? Random font of the day? Type a keyword get list of fonts? Type a word, see various fonts set in that word? Spill your greatest wishes.

QBN Certified - Winkreative

Wink does some really nice stuff, but they slapped together that all-caps logo. The 'AT' pair is in dire need of some kerning. Mock me if you wish, but odd that they let that slip - the rest of the typography is so spot-on.

ink traps - who needs 'em?

rabattski asked about the value of ink traps in modern fonts...

I'd say they don't hurt as long as you're using the trapped font in sub-12pt. land. Are they necessary? Probably not in most cases. Certainly don't do any good on screen. But in certain printing scenarios (uncoated paper) the traps still do their job to maintain a font's form.

That's why separate cuts for large and small sizes make a typeface so much more usable.

Quick, name me some web magazines. Specifically looking for those that show all content on a virtual spread and the reader clicks the pages to navigate. Such as Stockholm New:

Buying RAM in EU

A question for the Europeans: where do you buy your RAM? I'm in Stockholm for a couple months and the customs charges on shipments from the US are killing me. Hence dealram.com isn't the haven it used to be...
