Scariest film moment

I'm trying to find a clip that's instantly scary and shocking (short clip)... something related to aliens would be nice... if it's not loud, I can always add the FX.

But, I can't seem to think of anything truly frightening... I'm not scared easily...

Anybody got any ideas?

Jobs that violate ethics

Watched this story on military drones (robots)... I don't think I could ever do a job like that, or write the software program that would be used for war.

Then again... a lot of software could be used for good or bad purposes, so it's difficult to argue that software engineers would be the primary cause of such problems. And the robots are already in use, so one could argue that we need people with some degree of ethics operating this equipment.

I'm not sure there are equivalent jobs in design that violate this sort of ethic. Any of you been offered any jobs that violate you wouldn't accept?

One time I interviewed for a job working on those spyware programs, and I hate those things, so I couldn't take it.

What is "Interactive Designer"

With all the titles floating around... i was curious... do Interactive Designers actually code as well?

The ad agency where I interned had IDs who basically designed, but outsourced the coding, and I found several places that do this as well. But, if you're a ID who codes as well, are you an Interactive Designer/Developer?

Or is it just... here's your title, you do whatever the hell we want you to!

yuppies...

tired of talking about hipsters...

"These days the yuppie is just as likely to be running an art gallery (White Cube, Frieze), a city PR firm, a TV production company, or an eco-fashion store. Today's yuppies range from kitchen table entrepreneurs to City whizz kids who made their money, and then got out to launch their own charity, website or (ideally) "green" company. Many are so-called "green atoners": affluent types keen to offset guilt with green action."

Amsterdam

Just curious... is it insanely difficult to get a job in the Netherlands as a designer (interactive/motion or print)?

Can't be easy I imagine...

Magazine text

Is it more standard to justify text in magazines?

I am editing one, and it has a lot of hyphenation and odd spacing that occurs with the justification...

Inappropriate free/spec work

I've been working with a client, who is rather high profile, and has not paid for design identity work.

They wanted to have a new site design to coincide with the identity, and they wouldn't pay any deposit. Today I saw that they just hacked together a new shitty logo.

What do you guys do in these cases? I feel like there should be some place to report them to or something...what a waste of time...

Secret of Monkey Island

We (instantaction.com) just launched the Secret of Monkey Island: SE on Facebook and http://instantaction.com

Here's the FB app:

http://apps.facebook.com/monkey-…

Anyone can play the 20 min demo for free... let me know what you think about the interface, etc. This is an old version of the UI, and is already being re-worked as we speak, so any input is always appreciated and helpful.

Thanks!

Job advice

So, next summer I'm going to start looking for jobs in places like Seattle, Portland, NYC, etc. I'll have to make a new portfolio site and add all new work.

I'd like to know what areas I should improve upon for a new portfolio (weaknesses). I don't get much feedback here, so I have to ask all my design friends from other places. I know I need a demo reel...

I'm going to be looking for interactive/motion work... I will have only been at my job (and in west virginia) for one year when I look for a new job, so hopefully people will understand why I am looking to move towards larger metro areas.

Portland Designers

The agency where i work in Portland, OR is looking for some designers who are great with quick photorealistic retouches in Photoshop.

We get a lot of work from adidas that involves changing colors of shoes, and very detailed image editing and manipulation in Photoshop... anybody got those skills that needs some work?

Savannah College of Art & Design

Has anybody known anyone else who has completed SCAD's online MFA program?

It seems like a great school, but I'm a bit skeptical of the online program, and want to see if anyone had a good experience with it.

Thanks

web content and CMS

How many of you have had this problem...

You've designed a site, and incorporated it into a CMS for people, and nobody has the content together. So, it begs the question... how can the design be good when you don't know for what content you're designing?

In the past, whenever I was designing for clients, whether it was a print or web project, they had no problem telling me what they wanted, and giving me all the information to include.

But, I've been getting this problem a lot lately... perhaps it's just bad clients? Or maybe in the future, I should put together a thorough questionnaire, and not start designing anything until all content is ready.

It just seems like everyone wants a website, but not many people know what to do with it when they get it...
