I think it's worth considering the medium here. In places like New York (and I imagine most large cities), street art (subversive, youth culture or whatever else you care to call it) has been completely usurped by advertisers. The walls in these photographs are usually painted up with faux-street marketing messages for adidas, H&M or DKNY.
That banksy would take the same, junior high, "fuck the man," message and recreate it on a MASSIVE scale (there's another going up on W Houston as we speak) utilizing the existing faux-street marketing infrastructure says something about the state of our culture today.
I think, on that level, it's incredibly successful. I hope we see the city covered in these things.

well just across the street from the last image there is a really nice mural of the gta4 cover. advertising or not i prefer good looking murals like that over any billboard. the dkny mural further east on canalstreet is sweet as well
