I'm a young architect about to start a family, and I'm ready to purchase my first camera in 15 years.
I'd like to constantly carry around and snap photos on vacations and completed work sites. I'm also looking ahead to documenting a baby. I'm not in the market for a conspicuously over engineered DSLR, so I've landed with interest on the Olympus PEN E-P5.
Can anyone attest to better camera in this (between-DSLR-and-compact) segment? Shamelessly, exterior looks are of primary importance to me, and the PEN above has a retro look that I don't quite love. The other concern is that it does't appear to capture 4k video, which may be something most will offer in the coming years. I'm quite drawn to the look of the Sigma quattros...http://i1266.photobuc...
But, from what I read, these Sigmas don't work well with low/indoor lighting, quick attempts to capture an instant, most editing software, and folks who want to take over 100 photos on a single battery. What do you all like? Any buzz about new similar products in the coming months?

Do you want interchangeable lens?
- I think I'd like that capability. Unless the camera comes with an amazingly versatile lens.waterhouse

4k video will be tough to have options...
- Can you tell me what you mean?waterhouse
- I don't think there are many 4k also not too big camera that's made for both video and photo.pango
- I see. That's too bad, as I'm sure compact cameras will shoot 4k in a few years.waterhouse

24-600mm fixed lense. No 4K video though.... still the range might be nice for a family cam.

- I used my X10 to destruction, then upgraded to the X20 - adore this series of cameras. Some work to get results you are happy with but worth the perseverance.face_melter

I'd aim for:
*APS-C or bigger sensor
*interchangeable
*manual controls
*electronic viewfinderlots of options in the fuji x range for this:

Budget (or did I miss something)? That's the most important question.
I'd get a Sony A7s of Panasonic G4 (Panasonic seems to be doing a good job establishing themselves as solid dslr video players).
Fuji XT1 for interchangeable lenses and great looks.
None of those are cheap, though.

- No budget really. Although I'm expecting to spend ± $1000 US.waterhouse

Lots of option on the Fujifilm X series as sounded by inteliboy.
- except no 4k.
Just give up on 4k. life will be easier.pango

I recently bought a Sony a6000 and it's awesome. all the benefits of a full size dslr in a tiny package you can fit in your (somewhat big) pocket.
manual controls
interchangeable lenses
viewfinder
tilt screen
aps-c sensor
24mp
great in low light
fastest focusing in the price pointIt's a big brother to the NEX-5t ^^
- ah! I'm inclined to buy it. there's a set like this: http://www.mediamark…oey

I have till 630€ and was thinking in buying something like this (ordered by preference):
SONY DSC-RX 100 III
PANASONIC Lumix DMC-TZ101
CANON PowerShot G7 X Mark II
But a friend told me to invest instead in something like this:
SONY Alpha 6000
read fate's comment afterwards.
any thoughts or alternative suggestions in the same price range?- depends on what you are using it for.. if you just want an everyday carry camera then RX100 or the Pana-TZ101 will be great, Canon is nice too.....futurefood
- you really can't go wrong with one of these three cameras. Personally, I use the RX100 mk1. I carry it around pretty much everywhere. i dont like....futurefood
- the pop-up viewfinder on the mk3, so PanaTZ101 looks interesting if looking for built in EVF.futurefood
- Instead of A6000, have you checked out the recent Fuji APS-C
lineup? great cameras!futurefood - additionally,
not sure about sony rx100 mk3 or the pana/canon,futurefood - but the rx100 mk1 is built like a mini tank, i must have dropped it from standing height +10x now, still works 100%. just a note..futurefood
- thanks futurefood. your first two comments were my initial thought but...oey
- my friend ask me why pay for carl zeiss if I can have a full frame camera for the same price with detachable lenses and great quality as well.oey
- i read before that the A600 was full frame but it's actually not.oey
- yea, they are damn expensive for what they are. full frame? nice!
go for it. that will be my next camera purchase in the near futurefuturefood - thats why i bought rx100 mk1, found one for $100. the quality is just right for a pocket camera
let us know what you get!futurefood
