George Floyd’s brother Philonise said he believes Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with second-degree murder in Floyd’s death, knew exactly who Floyd was as he pressed his knee into his neck. Not only that, Philonise said he believed it was personal, and he’s not the only one who sees it that way.

Former co-worker David Pinney said that not only did Floyd and Chauvin know each other, but they had a contentious history.

Mayor gets booed for refusing to defund and abolish police force.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/07/u…

Can we live in a society with no cops? Can we be nice and not harm each other? Maybe 99% of society has the wherewithal to do so but how about the other 1%

Also the media profits from negativity, it’s their job to report on the worst news of the day, never the best. For every shitty act committed by a cop how many good acts were committed? Thousands? Tens of thousands? We hear about none of them but they’ve benefited all of us.

    • But having said that my experiences with cops have been 50-50 negative positive_niko
    • Reduce funding!
      Increase cops' pay+benefits!
Fire every cop who crosses the line!
      Make cops great again.

Ex-police officer Derek Chauvin charged with murder, manslaughter in George Floyd death

He'll probably just go to another precinct, but hey!

    • Oh, wrote a bad cheque?nb
    • Nope, it was revenge nb. The bad cop worked security at the club 17 YEARS, George moved to town got a job as security, they let the cop go. Cop was pissed.robotron3k
    • The club was probably paying the cop couple grand a month under the table doing security. Obviously Floyd was well liked and they let the bad cop go.robotron3k

With all the shit that's going down, is there a better solution?

Is it racist cops that are the issue? maybe, but there are tons of black cops who are just as brutal as we saw in the Atlanta video.

Is it the Police chiefs? bad hiring? Is it just the nature of people who want to be cops? working out issues they had in highschool?

What country has an exemplary police force? and what does that mean? no violence? no arrests? more community involvement?

Does it hinder on a peaceful, orderly law-abiding society? is America just too unruly?

Can we function as a society without a police force?

    • I don't think you could ever call America a peaceful, orderly, law-abiding society. Is any country?Ianbolton
    • We don't need to answer all these questions to make a massive improvement. The solution is actually pretty simple.nb
    • 1. Nationwide rules of misconduct
      2. Fire cops who break rules
      3. Prosecute officers the same way we do every one else. Equal playing field.
      nb
    • If a cop walked into a bank and robbed it, we'd send them to jail. It should be no different for assault, for abuse, for using a weapon.nb
    • Some cases will be hard to prosecute, it won't be perfect. But cops are getting away with murder. Cops must be made to fear the consequences of their actions.nb
    • ^ This won't solve all our problems with the police, but it will make the biggest difference with relatively minimal effort.nb
    • Start with dismantling police unions and work down the list12xu
    • Japan comes to mind. They seem to do things there a little differently. Seems like there is more order, more respect, citizens take the onus upon themselves to_niko
    • ...live in a just and safe society. We need to do things because we want to, because it's right for our fellow human beings not because a higher power says so_niko
    • The ability to legally abuse people just needs to be taken away. The line is so wide barely any cop ever ends up crossing it.ben_
    • not because the authorities or the government say so, because once they're out of sight we think we're free to act however we want to._niko
    • it's like the story of towns that removed stop signs, once the onus was on the citizens to watch out for one another, accidents went down drastically._niko

There are examples going on in Indigenous communities in Canada as well, but I thought that an example from the USA would be more compelling to consider.

Minimize the police budget wherever possible and fund initiatives that can tackle these issues in a more co-operative way.

    • Reduce the equipment budget (militarization) and spend that money on more paid time off, therapy, care, etc.nb

The incident is a couple of years old...newly released footage.

Video of a police officer fatally shooting a teenager as he ran away has been released two years after the shooting occurred. Isiah Murrietta-Golding was 16 when he was shot in the back of the head by a police officer in April 2017.

Murrietta-Golding was unarmed at the time of the shooting, said Stuart Chandler, the attorney for his father.

Surveillance footage shows the teen climbing a fence and then taking about eight steps before being shot by one of two officers seen in the video.

Body camera footage appears to show the other officer on the scene say "good shot" to the officer who fired the weapon.

Doesn't matter what he was alleged to have done...this is fucked.
