    I don't believe that - people aren't spending any more than they would normally - they're just bringing the purchases forward. So the government won't get any more money in the long run. I'm afraid it's just down to the moronic public acting like headless chickens and creating shortages where there were none.

    I suspect the govt were trying to spike the union's guns by getting the public to take defensive action to take the sting out of any possible strike action. But, as usual, they didn't think it through or they were too stupid to realise it would end up causing panic buying instead.
