It is a tradition that maybe made sense four thousand years ago in a middle-eastern desert where hygiene was poor and water to wash your cock daily scarce but in today's west it is just an unnecessary trauma/mutilation passed from father to son.
Most people in Europe (where nobody sane even considers doing it) don't even know it is so commonly performed in the US and usually are horrified when they hear about it—unless I don't know something.
In the end most American men say it's practical and in the grand scheme of things harmless, but for fuck's sake, give me one good reason to do this to your newborn child!
Wikipedia:
"infant circumcision rates in the United States holds that 30% of newborn American boys were being circumcised in 1900, 55% in 1925, and 72% in 1950."One could only imagine what sort money this has been for the medical industry...
Oh wait:
"Circumcision is not covered by health insurance as it is not a medically necessary procedure so you will have to pay for the full cost yourself out of pocket. Circumcision with general anesthesia should cost between $2000 and $3000. This includes the doctor performing the procedure and the anesthesiologist. Circumcision of adults is less expensive, as adults can opt to have only local anesthesia."also...
"Circumcision is extremely rare in the world outside the United States, and even within the United States, the circumcision rate has dropped by more than half. In 1980 over 80% of newborns in the United States were circumcised while in 2007 less than 40% of infants were circumcised."

2 million boys born a year, times $2K: it is a potential 4 billion dollar market. If you err... cap it, that is.
