“This seems like the wrong direction”

Hardly. Apple's long term business plan is to build on its commercially- astute decisions made after the launch of the iPod, then iPhone, then iPad, locking its consumers into a mostly-walled garden where they take 30% of EVERYTHING.

The really funny thing is, all hints point at them extending their iOS philosophy onto the desktop, maybe even as far as the professional range, meaning that every. last. program. you. buy. puts 30% into Apple's pocket.

It's amazing what a brand can do (in terms of making money) when it inspires such unthinking loyalty amongst its acolytes.

    • and before you have a go.. I'm hardly a PC/*nix fanboy..
