  yes, you can use authorize.net as just a gateway and connect it to your local merchant account. I've also set up people with Paypal Pro, which handles both the gateway and account, but depending on your volume they can be a lot more expensive.

  Both your bank and Paypal give you a variable rate based on what kind of volume you do, Paypal just tends to be more expensive for higher volumes, but maybe cheaper if your doing low volume. A lot of banks don't even want to deal with you if your below a certain monthly volume.
