The iMac will handle the job just fine, just make sure your monitor is quality (I think the 24" was good, not the 20...).

      Yeah, 4Gs is key.dog_opus2/4
4 is absolute minimum, i'd go 8 or 16. obviously from a 3rd party and NOT APPLE. they will jack uacescence3/4
oh can you only put 4gb in an imac? well that's crapacescence4/4

If I could afford it, I'd get a Mac Pro. More power is ideal for working with huge files, HDR, stitching/photomerge, batches, etc. I'm not a photographer, but when I did a stitching project for my professional image editing class a couple years ago on my iMac, and it took FOREVER.

iMac's reflective screen could be a deal breaker - it is for many. Also,
20" iMac has a cheap TN panel which lacks colour accuracy. 24" is ok. 4GB ram is a must for photos, but buy it somewhere else, like Crucial (it's user-replaceable).

The new iMacs (silver) have a lower colour depth (6-bit only) than the old white iMacs. While not a deal-breaker for home users or web-folks, as a photog your friend should either seek out an older C2D white machine or go the distance and get a Pro with a GOOD monitor. The Samsung 30" 305T rocks. There are many others out there as well.

    And LOADS of RAM.

    • does that apply to 24" iMacs as well?rafalski1/2
      Believe so.pylon2/2

What kind of photography does your friend do?

If it's a lot of location stuff, then perhaps a Macbook Pro would be a better choice, as any quick processing (or remote control) can be done on site.

Max it out on RAM, and use an external cinema display back in the studio.
