Beautifully executed but ultimately an expensive and pointless exercise surely? A montage of Kubrick's amazing visuals would have been way cheaper and as effective. Wannabe filmmakers as opposed to communicators...

how exactly is it pointless? are you suggesting that television advertising should always go for the lowest common denominator because it would be cheaper?
the quality of the promo further reinforces the more 4 brand, and that can only be a good thing for them. besides, i liked watching it.

Nothing wrong. You just contradicted yourself. It's a promo more than an ad. Given that most tv channels are running at tight constraints if I were in charge I'd have thought a better solution would be to do some treatment of one of the most gifted visual directors in history that costs a fraction of the price. Sony aren't paying for this, Channel 4 is partially public funded so I think it's a tiny bit unneccessary and irresponsible - not technically design but bad communication. Yes looks lovely but so what?

well, yeah. A promo is funded by the broadcaster who makes money of the ludicrous spend of advertisers (Guiness' 10 million). When one is funded publically and one is funded by big corporations there's a huge difference.

according to the 30 seconds of research i just did, (so i could well be wrong) channel 4 is publicly owned but entirely commercially self-funded. so in effect guiness and the rest of them did just pay for that promo.
and even if it was out of my own pocket, i would still have enjoyed watching that, and a lot of the other channel 4 promos (the gun crime one is nice too).

spots like these are some of the only opportunities that broadcasters have to establish and define their brand attributes, which they have to do in order to maintain balance between their brand and the content brands that they host. it's money well spent.

If you like this, you guys should check out the BBC's Arena documentary made by Kubrick's 17 year old daughter of the "making of The Shining".
Clearly an inspiration for this ad.
Worth watching just to see Jack Nicholson charming Kubrick's mum.
Also clever how they used the "steady-cam" tracking shot pioneered by Kubrick in the shining. Sure you all got that reference tho.

It's worth watching to see him psych himself up to do the axe through the door scene, that bit's brilliant. And you're right, this has even more resonance if you've seen that doc, the sets etc are fucking perfectly recreated, and the cinematography is spot on the quality of the light as it moves from indoor to the snow to the hotel corridors are 100% bang on.
This has fed the film nerd in me to busting point. love it. I might even watch a few of the movies.
