  I would get cut vinyl for that - its removable and cheap.

  Used to have a giant sticker with hi-res image of Serials Experiments Lain to cover the whole wall... The wife hated it though.

  for painting detailed stuff, latex paint is not optimal, use enamel paint, just make sure the manufacturer doesn't warn against using it on baby-related items.
