i designed my 2 simple tattoos. one is a kanji. but i am proud to say i didn't go into a shop and drool and point at one in a book, i researched it a drew it myself. the other is a simple shape that i designed years ago.
don't have any pics. so just picture detritus' star of david again. kthxbye

man I think tattooist should design tattoo's. I have friends who are custom tattooers that slighty cringe when people design there own tattoo's. I mean help with imagery is one thing, it basically turn the tattooist into a production assistant.

I fully understand the longevity of tattoo's, but actually designing a tattoo yourself from start to finish. I understand getting what you really want is crucia.

WTF?
will you tattoo something you don't like? just because the artist made it?do your clients never have ideas or demand that you do something exactly as they want?
I think a tattoo is much more personal than any design logo work, you can't compare the two things...
If I like the tattoo artist style and I want something in his style, I do it, but if I want to tattoo something mine and personal I shoudn't??

my clients have lots of ideas, which always come through in "their' work. But I am not a production artist and wouldn't comp a drawing from a client and replicate it would you?
Do you have tattoo's esk?
But its a profession such as ours, I would turn down crap work if the idea was bad. Plus who gets tattoo's of things they don't like from tattooists. Any one that goes to an artist because they like their work has obviously researched and already appreciative and understanding of what they want.

I think that you people think that design = art and tattoo = art.
It's more complicated than that. both are craftsman that work with clients.
I can differenciate my work of my personal work. as tattooists should do to.Of course I prefer when clients give me total confidence and let me be creative, but I also understand clients that already know what they want.
As above in my other post I told the tattooist to interpret my idea in his own style, and loved the result.
But to rule that every client should shut the fuck up and have no say on what they're getting... sounds stupid and nazi to me
