ads lie on a case-by-case basis. they position the image of the product or service at a certain distance from the experience of the product or service. it has to be far enough away to leave room for fantasy, but close enough not to piss people off. it's a delicate balance.
add to that the insatiable demands of the consumer for novelty, and the almost shamanic power that brands have been given in our society and you've got a pretty fraught industry that people feel incredibly strongly about. everyone gets snarky about advertising because they're so goddamned invested in it.
