I don't think it's dead but I do agree with a lot of the sentiments of the original post. I find these days a lot more of my work is smaller companies who want increasing functionality in their sites that I can't provide for their shrinking budgets and I'm doing more and more customising of pre-built CMS's and shopping carts etc.
It doesn't necessarily mean I don't try to keep the design fresh and I don't buy templates but certainly I do use pre-built options to power sites rather than building them myself.
I've never seen what all the fuss is about though, design is just a job like any other. Certainly you have a better working environment than most other jobs but it is just a job.
