I am beginning to believe that good design is dead!
Everything from Web 2.0, $1 clip art & photos, $10 web templates, $5 Flash components, etc... Why bother designing, the proof is in the pudding, take a closer look around us. Design is becoming a thing of the past, everything is becoming homogenized.

The people who pay for, and are happy with clip art and templates etc. would never have been a client anyway. There is a lot more design and varying levels and degrees of design, that somewhat dilutes it, but there will always be a place for unique, quality design skills. But with the volume design exists in today (so many more mediums and devices), you can't expect it all to be gold.

To an extent I think this is true.
Small to medium businesses seem to be taking to these "out-of-the-box" design options because they're cheap; but even then they are asking designers (often students) to implament them.
On a grand scale, I don't think good design will ever die out. "Big business" or "the corporate world" will never go for a template solution as they strive on brand equity.

I don't think it's dead but I do agree with a lot of the sentiments of the original post. I find these days a lot more of my work is smaller companies who want increasing functionality in their sites that I can't provide for their shrinking budgets and I'm doing more and more customising of pre-built CMS's and shopping carts etc.
It doesn't necessarily mean I don't try to keep the design fresh and I don't buy templates but certainly I do use pre-built options to power sites rather than building them myself.
I've never seen what all the fuss is about though, design is just a job like any other. Certainly you have a better working environment than most other jobs but it is just a job.

I was referring to design in general (graphic, illustration, photography, product, typography, etc...) it has all become extremely watered down as a whole.
