They're really expensive for what they are. A 2 seat town runabout.

The 2008 smart fortwo achieved the highest ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for front and side crashworthiness.
The highlight of the safety management system is the tridion safety cell. The safety cell is made from steel, half of which is high-strength material, especially in highly stressed areas. The cell is designed to keep occupants protected. The reinforced steel and the design of the car, including the wheel bases, allow the distribution of the crash energy.
The smart fortwo comes standard with four airbags (two full-sized front and two side for head and thorax protection). Other safety features such as Electronic Stability Program ESP®, Brake Assist and and anti-lock brakes are also standard.

Rented one in Majorca a couple years ago. It's a nice little car but always would make this alarming beeping noise whenever you went up a big hill, and you felt like you you were gonna tip over backwards.

I friend of mine used to drive one. They may look small, but there is loads of leg room. Because there are no back seats you can whack the seat back as far as you want, I'm 5'11 and had my legs out straight with room to spare. He's 6'2" and had no problem driving it.
It was kinda weird getting out of it though, you forget how close to to back end of it you are until you step out, shut the door and realise that you are practically stood behind it shutting the door...

These have been launched recently in the states eh?
We've had them in Europe for years - they are made by Mercedes Benz.I've been in a Smart For Two - they are pretty scary cos you sit quite high up in them.
I've had Smart - Roadster Coupe for 3 years and I still love it everyday I drive it. Great in the summer too cos the roof comes off.
The reason i bought it was that i was after a fun fast car that would hold its value rather than depreciating. Id read in car magazines that production of the Roadster by Mercedes was ceasing and that they'd probably become collectors cars in the future.
3 years later and yup, the prices have frozen :)My Baby

if you're looking for better gas mileage, an old Honda CRX can go farther and you could probably get two of them for what one Smart Car costs. I've got a 94' civic hatchback and it gets only a mile or two less per gallon than whats listed for the Smart For Two. lol!
