Been looking at various reviews on the web, but curious if anyone out there has any suggestions on players?

Should I wait until the profile 2 players are out? Should I go with a standalone, or a PS3? What features do you think are critical?

Sorry for the barrage of questions and thanks :)

    Thanks guys!

Looks like the PS3 might just be the way to go. I didn't realize it was BD-Live or profile 2 compliant with a firmware upgrade. That's awesome. I also like the fact that you can stream media to it.

Anyone have any cons to getting the PS3 over a standalone?

If you get the standalone you can't play games on it.

    • i don't play console games much, so not too worried about that.fugged

PS3 is great, you can store all your photos on there too. I just hook up my camera and it downloads them all. It's fabby. and the web browser is half decent too.

like everyone else said, get the ps3 w/ remote. I've got http://tversity.com for streaming music/video, but plenty around.

    good luck

A standalone player will give you better performance over a PS3.

Depends on your budget... top end Blu-ray players cost a lot more than a PS3.

Are you a money-no-object audiophile kinda guy? Or do you just want a Blu-ray player with the option of being able to play games sometimes?

I just got a PS3. In terms of Blu-Ray, the only thing I watched was the DVD that comes with the system (introduction to the console) and the high-def was awesome. I also bought a cable so that I can view games in high-def (we have a high-def TV but we haven't bought the package to enable it). It's great so far.

I plan on getting Planet Earth series next and watching it.

    • Package to enable it? High-def is high-def. If you got the player and the tv, your off. What do you mean?Raniator1/2
No, there's something you have to do. I think I don't have the entire TV package yet.Jaline2/2

    You confwuusssing me now!

    Hi-def input > HDMI cable > Hi-def TV

    Done.

There is no 'package' involved, unless your talking about satellite TV – Sky or something like that...

    • I swear there is! I'm definitely not explaining this correctly, so don't mind me. Someone told me before though.Jaline1/8
But I do mind – I think you are being fed duff information.Raniator2/8
You could be right, but my uncle also tried something, and he's a techy. I'll look into what you said.Jaline3/8
      Nice brush off ;)Raniator4/8
Cable TV & Sats need a HD box to view HD channels. Jaline is correct, unless you do the HD Ant, but who does thatjoyride5/8
Yeah, but Jal is talking about PS3. Maybe it's me that isn't understanding this properly.Raniator6/8
oh yeah, true, get HDMI cable and set the ps3 to 1080i/p and you should be good.joyride7/8
I already have the cable, but thanks for enlightening me with more HD info, guys :)Jaline8/8

Raniator - Where is performance better? Video decoding, processor wise, or somewhere else? I'd think the PS3 would have a better processor, so I'm assuming decoding?

yeah, what joyride said sounds right! I remember something about a box.

    • You can't watch HD TV with just a PS3, right? You still need the box.Jaline1/4
Yeah, but your PS3 is the box!
Haha, nevermind... I must be missing something here...
      Raniator2/4
      WHAT!!??? Tell me more.Jaline3/4
Yes. Sorry, I wasn't aware we were talking about TV. Thought it was movies and games...Raniator4/4

Processing has nothing to do with it, so yeah it would be the decoding, resulting in a better picture and sound. When I said 'performance' I meant quality, not speed.

I'm probably not going to do much gaming.

First priority is being able to watch hi-def movies and output 5.1 dd, dts and pcm. 7.1 doesn't matter for me, since my audio components can't handle it. Besides that I've already wired the room for 5.1, and I'm not about to go breaking into the sheetrock at this point.

The Wi-Fi/ethernet and streaming features are also a big plus for me, so I can stream content from my PC.

    • p.s. thanks for the help Raniator.fugged

on the topic of digital tuners, tv and cable. it's weird - I can watch all my neighbors on demand movies as they are watching them. we have the most basic cable package, so we don't have any of the on-demand stuff.

my wife and I have been trying to figure what neighbors are watching what. someone is really into independent films, someone is really into porn, and someone watches a lot of crappy chick flicks.

One night someone was watching some crappy t&a flick and kept rewinding this one nude scene. after that scene, it stopped. :) dude was so rubbing one off, heh.

oh - and Jaline, i think if your tv has a built in QAM tuner, you don't need the extra box.
