  ok i realise i'll probably get timelined outta here but i only just stumbled across this -- highlight any word when typing on a mac, press apple-ctrl-D and a dictionary definition pops up!

  doesn't work for me, do you have to turn this feature on?

  • If your on 10.4 you might need to open the dicitonary app go in prefs and select "open dictionary panel"– modern

  woops you must be right doesn't seem to work in Firefox, boo. works in text edit and Mail tho. ah well, NEARLY a brilliant feature!

  • wont work in Firefox because it doesn't use os native text controls. Thats why safari is better– modern

  you can also right-click to get the context menu and select look up in dictionary.

  for firefox, you can install onmycommand and add a dictionary lookup command to the context menu

  It also works if you highlight the word and right-click or control click on it. If the word is spelled wrong, it'll usually show the correct spelling at the top of the context menu. If it is correct, you have the option of looking it up in the Dictionary

  or just pop open spotlight(apple-space) and type in the word

  1) Cursor has to be placed over the word
  2) Must be in a Cocoa app
  3) Slower computers = long wait
