  Back before the digital scanners were dang expensive. I was wondering.. would it make sense to get a 35mm film scanner now? They must be pretty cheap on ebay or who knows where now.
  Do these scanners degrade with time?
  What to look for? What to be careful about when buying? Which models?..

  Rafalski, I used Photofixpro based in Arizona to scan my old 35mm and medium format negatives. Thye did a great job and it was relatively inexpensive. I found that most negative scanners and the carriers never really worked well or peformed upto my expectations, even the AGFA and KODAK negative scanners are not worth the money and time.

  i've always struggled with dust in these things.. and i'd imagine this problem gets much worse with time.

  nikon has a line of excellent desktop scanners. if your looking at investing cash give them a look

  I'm thinking of digitizing old family photos and all of mine, but mostly of having something to play with in future.

  Just toying with the idea of shooting film some time. I never liked film photography, but knew I would someday.

  Don't even think of getting that without the automatic slide feeder, which costs like another $500. The thing is nearly useless without the slide feeder--unless you have a teenage slave, who does nothing but sit and feed slides into it.

  boobs is correct. Look into getting a scanner with a bulk loader

  I've done literally thousands of scans using the medium format version of the Nikon Scanner. Very time consuming.

  Yes, i have a Nikon coolscan V ED. It's nice and does a great job scanning films and slides. I've scanned about 500 negatives since I bought it about 3wks ago(I've been thinking about buying it for 2yrs). I have about 2000 negatives to go.

  I was thinking about getting done by somewhere/someone but I actually enjoy the process of doing it myself. It's almost meditating. You can scan up to 6 negative frames consecutively and most of my negatives are cut at 4frames. Like it's been said, it is time consuming and I usually do it while I am doing something else. I just have to feed new frames every 10-15min.
