It has come to my knowledge that in the UK and the US owning a hedgehog is the new hype and some people are even paying around €500 for one.
Those are forest animals that will suffer when confined in flats or backyards, and owning one is a crime.
I beseech you to put an end to this nonsense, and say no to this if it ever crosses your path.

a friends brother has a couple of these 'pet' hedgehogs. they are bred as household pets.

I'm sure any wild animal likes Discovery Channel, but all I'm saying is: free the hedgehogs.
For instance, I have at least 5 hedgehogs in my backyard right now (they nest here because there's a forest nearby and that's what they do in the mountains). I could make €2500 in a single night just by selling them. And probably do the same next week.
Do you see my point? It's not worth it.

these pet hedgehogs are specifically bred to be pets. they arent fleafilled hedgehogs snatched from backyards

Last night (Saturday), as I walked my dog under the orchards, I bumped into an old hedgehog ["Ouriço Caixeiro" - (O-'ree-soh - kai-shey-roo)]. My dog sniffed it over a fair bunch of yards and pushed me to it. It was a very big and old hedgehog standing over a stone-wall, and being so old, or surprised, it didn't even took care to hide under it's spikes. I looked into a pair of beautiful black eyes and then I tapped it's cute little surprisingly warm nose. "Godspeed you little fellow", I said.

My next job is asking my neighbours (who don't look too talkative) why they keep their dog in such a short leash when they have a fair playground for it. This, without getting my nose broken. I live on the edge of rural warfare.

Actually, this only corroborates my long-life premiss - of which I have seldom been the victim and the foe: the more you talk about anything at all, it seems, the more chances it has to become too much discussed and, thus, in a twist, less preserved.

How do we define what is suitable for a pet? Perhaps after some training and careful breeding of the various subspecies, hedgehogs could become a welcome companion for humans.
