  When people talk about fonts and serifs, Bodoni is almost mentioned as the nonplusultra when it comes to perfect layout and text-settings.

  What`s so special about this typeface and
  why is it so hard to set a text in Bodoni?

  Cause they're idiots and it looks pish at anything less than 18pt.

  Because it was a landmark European in printmaking, and was considered the first "modern" typeface (hence the "Industrial" and "Modern n.20" versions that loosely go around). At the time (18th century), it was also a breakthrough in wood-block kerning because it introduced space regularity. So I've heard.

  text is not hard to set in bodoni,
  and it doesn look like pish under 18pt,
  its in fact made for reading texts and
  not to be used as 'decorative type' that is set big like
  titles and/or headlines.

  But it is also true that digital versions - for screen work, given the nature of pixels - cannot maintain the same proportion between the original thin strokes and bold strokes on smaller sizes. That's why many versions appeared.

  It was also very popular in the 1970's and 80's. Massimo Vignelli used it exclusively along with a handful of other typefaces. It's suitable for text but needs care in tracking and leading to make it readable.
