stereo->surround 44 Responses

  someone has given me a surround sound system and I want to to hook it up to my tv, the tv out only has two cables left and right stereo but the amp for the surround wants six inputs. Can this be done? do i need to get myself some sort of adaptor? was i wrong to smoke some bifta before attempting this?

  I think you're out of luck for true surround sound since the signal won't be encoded as Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, or DTS. I believe Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Surround and the likes can process a stereo signal into five playback channels if your receiver has that option. I've had mixed results with the latter and usually end up listening in stereo in that case, because it sounds better than the processed signal.

  some of that made sense to me. tbh i just want sound coming out of all six speakers but it only comes out of 2! (which ever 2 the stereo is plugged into) - is there anyway to split the two to six?

  If the receiver can do the signal processing, then yes you should be able to get it to work. I'm not an audiophile by an means and pretty ignorant so take everything I say with a grain of salt :)

  Does your receiver have any sort of controls for "listen mode" or the likes? On my receiver, I can select how the signal should be processed - Stereo, Virtual Surround, Dolby Surround, Dolby Pro Logic, etc... If I have a stereo signal coming in, and select the pro logic option, it attempts to break it up into the correct channels. But, like I said, the quality usually kinda sucks (IMO) and I end up just listening in stereo mode since that seems to give the best sound. The processed surround always sounds muddy and dead.
