    I don't like the term "dude" and one day was wishing for an alternative that I might use in every day parlance without seeming a part of the fratboy populace. A phrase from the Velvet Underground song "Sweet Jane" suddenly came into my head: "Ridin in a Stutz bearcat, Jim, you know, those were different times." I've tried since to bring this term into common usage via the internet, but so far with less sucess than my previous efforts, "//" and "gfy".

    gramme raises a valid point here, and one that I think I should discuss further. I feel I have not been 100% truthful with regards to my easy switch to using the 'Jim' as a greeting.

    You see, being Scottish, I already had Jim/Jimmy pre-installed as a sort of gretting and kept quiet when Rand proposed it as I knew it would mean less work for me trying to learn the complexities of it.
