Label Printing DIY

I'm researching label printers for my parent's business. Products are jars and sealed foods. I'm a web dev, so print isn't something I'm very knowledgeable in.
We want to make product labels ranging from 4x2.5 to 5x3 or whatever we see the need for. Seems more cost effective for us to print our own due to the variations of products and small batch quatity. Currently doing things on standard 8x11 label sheets, which works but ink smears on touch, been having to spray a varnish on them.
Any recommendations for printers? Any thoughts on the cost effectiveness of DIY?
Thanks!

Random ideas from someone who doesn't do this sort of thing:
Kraft paper, rubber stamps and ink, spray adhesive to attach
Stencil and spray paint - better a cheap airbrush like: https://www.harborfreight.com/de…
Dip the whole jar in wax and emboss the wax with a custom seal of some kind - maybe all the wax would get expensive.
raffia grass or ribbon around the top and and wax seal it together.
I wouldn't want to do 1000 of any of these. If you have that sort of quantity, you should probably get labels professionally done, maybe a labelling machine.
