I think as long as MACS are the standard for the print industry they will stay afloat.

merill lynch says "sell"?
the guy says sell to everything at a time like this

Final Cut seems to really be putting a dent in Premiere users as well

Funny., there's a Microsoft advertising in the same page.
- matt240
dude who wrote the article probably has a shitload of microsoft shares hehe

its a bit silly really. What they forget to mention is how much money apple have in reserve...plus a solid base of users that will always buy.
I also think the new range of portables is a real winner, I thought they undersold the iBook (probably the best thing they made in years...a cheap, durable and stylish laptop) It looks like they ae taking the best elements of the iBook into the TiBook.
It's a winner for sure.
And dont forget the new iPod is just around the corner...in these harsh times I think they are doing alright!
and on a side note..Look how high profile apple is now? Since when has their keynotes got so much cross media publicity? love them or hate them apple know how to generate interest...just need to transfer into market share I suppose!

The Darkside is strong you see.

Apple has been in way tougher times - especially befor Jobs came back.
I think the IPod alone is going to keep them afloat - according to Jobs today he said something like the IPod has 60% or %40 of the mp3 player market in Japan. and hey it's hardware - makes it a lot harder to steal

but consider the following - apple has been lossing millions for the past how many quarters now? they've lost market share to Linux (!!! an OS where people still struggle to find fucking drivers for their printers) - something like 5% vs 3% w guess who owning the remailing 92%. apple also decided to charge for upgrades for all their iApps now and the reason they gave was a lack of enough 'switches' that they had been counting on. Nobody - corporations, educational institutions, regular folk - has been /is/will be spending shit on IT upgrades for a while....
I'd love to think that apple was in shittier waters w Gilbert Emilio but that was the mid-90s during the beginning of a tech boom where apple's problem was more lack of vision than anything else.
to quote any random CNBC head, 'fundamentals just arent there'. so what if apple has the bitchin profile now w their 1700 ft screen laptop or their iPod is the bomb. if no one is buying, what difference does it make? And Ive already seen adds for ipod-like mp3 player-info manager portables that are at least $100 cheaper. As far as FCP goes, there are plenty of decent inexpensive DV editors for the PC, pretty much all things adobe and macromedia are ported to windows...cash reserves or no, this is going to be a hard hard year for Apple unless something miraculous happens. Hey I love macs too but facts iz facts.

Confession of a PC user (me):
FCP rules! All the other apps (even Avid Xpress) sux.

i think i've heard somewhere that shit head ... oh, sorry i mean bill gates own a very large sections of apples' shares?
did i dream that, or can someone confirm that?
thanks.
- illtronix0
actually, MS gave apple something like 10 mill a few years back. 98? 99? Im not sure but it did happen.
As for the FCP comment, yes it rox ass and I hope if the hardware side of things goes to shit, that Apple will continue to make great software and port that shit - including its super OS - to the PC. that would be the revenge of the jedi 4 real.

People love to cry wolf. Especially Merill Lynch. If you go back and look closely at their track record, you will see that they are not terribly accurate at forecasting. As for Apple going down the crapper, its not going to happen. The more important thing that people fail to realize is the ease of use of the hardware, and that lures people to use it. For most of the ‘normal’ people out there, they want to check email, burn cds, surf the web, and play with their digital cameras. For these uses, the Apple products are a better fit than most of the windows solutions out there. Market share is a terribly misleading thing for you to base your sole opinion on that they will fail. Microsoft does not make computers, Gateway, Dell, Compaq and others do, and last I checked Apple was #2 in hardware sales, behind Dell. The retail stores are working, and constantly packed. People are noticing. They are working on solidifying their 3 core audiences: Switchers, The Arts, and Education, and slowly people will come around.
Apple is and always will be a cult brand. Same with BMW, and Harley Davidson. While Honda makes cheaper and more reliable products, none have the same features, lust factor, and following as BMW and Harley do. The same goes for Apple. This factor ALONE will keep them in business. Add to the fact that their products are more stable, easier to use, better quality and far more innovative means that people will still buy them. How many people have ipods now? How many people are drooling over the new PowerBooks? A lot. Gil Amelio damn near killed Apple, the stuff they made in the mid 90’s was GARBAGE and expensive. Apple is slowly working to undo those mistakes. The next thing they need to do is get someone to provide them with some faster processors, and then the Wintel market will begin to cower in fear...that’s the one thing missing from the equation, and probably the hardest thing to accomplish, but it will happen.
And no, they are not charging for the iApp updates, only iDVD, and that’s because its a giant download. Pay attention!

apple will never file for chapter 11.
they have their market, which will increase with the economy.and im speaking from the point of view of some one who knows very little about econominology. (he)

1 , i think the musician in the apple new powerbook video is gay and a bad actor . http://www.apple.com/hardware/vi…
2. I wish one day i can afford to buy a mac , why do they have to be soo expensive... hmnyways..
- aphrothunder0
gah!
why can't any PC makers make a nice looking computer?
apples are pretty - but they aren't any easier to use
- 2cents0
i think this is a good sign of things to come...
sure apple could make thier own ipod compatible jacket but why bother when they can ride the momentum of an already great and successful brand...notice the ipod isn't included.
- unknown0
apple is the mercedes of the computer market. people will always want their status symbol computer.
theyve also been winning a lot more 'geeks' with osx. ive been seeing more and more people make the switch. i dont think theyre going to die out any time in the forseeable future.

I have always used mac. I have always heard the rumors of mac "goin' under" and I'm pleased that the rumors always came and went and I hope they continue to do so (and I suspect they will).
I'm pleased that this thread has not really turned into a mac vs. pc debate... i just hate that shit. You use a mac and love it? Great! You use a PC and love it? Great! I love you all.
Well I'm quite buzzed right now so I'll end this here post. Good night my friends. =]

Chip, please follow your own advice ( http://news.com.com/2100-1040-97… ).
otherwise, very compelling arguments. I was talking to someone I saw at a Mac store today ( Clarendon...DC reprezents ) and he mentioned the strong hardware sales. Cool. there are a lot of different ways to look at Apple's condition.
I cant lie tho. I almost had to rob the mac store for that 17" joint.
