Great article there.
I feel Design / Advertising is more creative than art because you have to be more creative to over come the restrictions imposed. I also feel the executions is far greater in design than art due to commercial standards.
I'm sure lots of people will disagree.

Advertising/design is not art.
In advertising/design you solve a problem, you answer a brief that the client gave you.
In art you solve your own problem, answer your own brief.

art -- message
design -- functionthe two overlap

(Sep 2 06, 07:27)are you jealous of art or something. If you think art is dull is the reason you ended up in design, saddo

art = personal expression
design = saving the world from having to live with yucky ugly things that dont work properly
- Astrid0
Art communicates with those interested and with those that engage with it.
Advertising/Design has to communicate with it's target group.

i think youre asking the wrong question: which one is better? Which is nonsense

I think a thing about art.
I think a thing about design.
I think a thing about how they are related.
I think a thing about what you think about all those things.

art = personal expression
????
what about 'impressionism' lol - art and design aren't really comparable. it's like trying to make apple pie using oranges instead of apples.
as for your dismissal of simon starling... if you don't get it, that's your own shortcoming. not his. there is an international diaspora that appreciates and enjoys what he and other contemporary artists do... it's not for everyone.
art isn't dull, your opinion of it however, may be.

This is just arguing semantics.
Trying to say design is not art or vice versa is like sayijng a terrier is not a dog.
ART in the larger sense, describes all creative human production. from arranging type on a page, to painting, sculpture, writing, or gardening.
GOOD ART requires a dedication to the craft that almost neccesitates that the output be saleable; so as to pay for materials used and costs of living for the artist.
And in all cases, it's the artist's knowledge of his craft, and a willingness to explore and break the rules to better communicate that seperates the good from the mediocre.
IMHO

design is for a client
art is for expression
- Monsterpiece0
Yes, semantics. IMHO the difference is intent.
Design sells goods & services.
Art sells ideas.
- ribit0
Wasnt this all discussed in an earlier thread(s)?
Did we work out the answer(s)?
- jfletcher0
I'll take what Danthon said one step further.
[to paraphrase a coworker] Design is a value delivery system for businesses. It add clear business value. It has goals.
Art is personal expression

In art you solve your own problem, answer your own brief.
Astrid
(Sep 2 06, 07:25)In art you only pose questions or leave the subject open for debate.

When artists do design (it happens sometimes) it is mainly crap.
When designers do art (which happens too often) it is mainly boring.
Bruno Munari was a great designer AND artist.
