I trust the level of taste here, so I was wondering what process you all have gone through in buying an engagement ring? I live in LA and it seems like there is a lot of disinformation or misinformation out there, along with a lot of outrageous brand markup.
How did yo guy settle on the sale?

You gotta know a guy. Or know a guy who knows a guy otherwise forget it it’s a rip off.

I found a jeweler who could take my design and make it real. I also found a dealer who I bought a stone from, separately. I sketched my design and had it made.
There are no deals on diamonds. That doesn’t exist, unfortunately. They cost what they cost as long as they are certified you can be relatively confident you aren’t being totally ripped off.

I went shopping with my wife to be. Tried on a lot of rings. What she thought she liked, was not what we ultimately picked. Not what I would have picked either. Her ring is smaller, less ostentatious but very pretty. Women are constantly complimenting her on it.
We looked at Birks and Tiffany, but I couldn’t perceive any difference that would justify the substantially higher price.
Ended up getting the ring at a small jewellers. Haggled down the marked price by maybe 30%. Got a smaller high grade stone which looked nicer than larger stones of lesser grade.
Ultimately she picked something that she was proud of, that didn’t break the bank, and the whole experience made me proud of her for being much a smart shopper.
10 years now. Best decision I ever made.

Much of this is true; get something that's one of a kind AND represents you / her / him / whatever.
This will be a "forever" ring; NOT trendy AAANNNDDD not disposable or replaceable.

We ALSO inherited various diamonds SOOO that helped...ideaist - ...I think each of our rings was about $1,000 - $2,000-ish (again, blood diamonds inherited!!!)ideaist

- I also agree, as designers, we shouldn't necessarily just get something off the shelf. It's not really much more to design it yourself in the end.monospaced
