If you wanna try etching, the easiest way is to print your design onto “toner transfer paper” (check amazon) and transfer it onto your metal. Ferric chloride will etch it for ya. I have a buddy who would do custom etching on lightsaber hilts and he used this method with great results.
I get asked this all the time, and it's one of The Reaons I really should get myself a small but powerful CNC mill.
If you're ok to 3d print them, try and go for a resin printer - they're actually quite cheap to buy these days, for about the dimensions that you're looking for - I think imbecile's got a recommendation in the 3d Printing thread here.
Other options are to buy metal discs and chemical etch them - still fiddly as you'd need to do them in two passes (front, then back) and likely have a laser-etcher describe the design through a black mask (as I imagine hydro's coins above might have been done?)
Failing that, a laser that can work on metals directly, but the sort that can do tangible physical relief are out of my sphere of understanding, unfortunately for me.
- huh. Hydro's were actually moulded? Interesting. BJAdams links to these, which look to me like they've been done with a metal-specific laser...Nairn
- Ah no, they're moulded too
I would think Laser etching would be an option for quick turn. Seems like a cool project btw.
- Agreed. An etching might be the only way with this timelinemonospaced
Don't you know someone who is retired or active who dedicated himself to engraving?
Or companies nearby that are dedicated to molds or stamping?
I would investigate there.
This, and, the timing... is unreal.
Hydro74 did a coin:
I’m actually making one for my gf as an anniversary present. My plan is to 3d-print the coin with vent sprues already in place. Picked up a high-temp silicone. Will use to make a 2-part mold of the print. Got a torch and a cheap crucible to melt pewter i bought on ebay.
I haven’t started yet though because my torch is rated for melting silver and i thought that would be cooler than pewter. Just haven’t gotten around to sourcing some.
