I didn't say it was a waste of time. I said it was expensive and you can do a lot of this work without a subscription.
Despite your family being annoying to be around, I wasn’t looking down my nose at anything.
And yes, a spreadsheet is a totally legit tool for tracking signals and trends (which PHDs use) if you are doing foresight stuff.

I was just calling out cannon for looking down his nose with his ridiculous judgment and flippant generalization about The Future Laboratory. It's absolutely ridiculous to think that a spreadsheet (that he probably doesn't even keep) can generate the same kind of insight as heavily invested PhDs.
I'm tired of narcissistic brats, I've been around my dad and sister all weekend and all they do is want to hear themselves talk.
How do you expect me to respond? "You're right cannon, the future laboratory is a complete waste of time and same with every other think tank in the world."

I've done some work for these guys, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was.
Canoe - is it some instinctual thing to be a total dongbag, or is it some sort of perverse affectation?
- Actually, it might not have been these guys - but a similarly-named and entirely transplantable company from West London.Nairn

A few years ago I read this book. The author is a PhD at The Future Laboratory.

Not exactly a spreadsheet.
- Correct, that is a book, not a spreadsheet. Very astute.cannonball1978

This thread isn't about you and your spreadsheet and your idiot idea that everyone should be a researcher.

I feel like there are a shit ton of these foresight services, all of which are priced for studios and not individuals. Most of these products are designed to confirm existing suspicions or insights for 5,10,20 year projections. The insights are "resold" in client decks.
But the insights themselves can be gained by simply spending a little time tracking trends and signals against a framework like SEEPV and keeping it in a spreadsheet as part of any designer/strategist's daily practice.
