I'll always remember the mother of a good chum pouring a line of boiling water from a kettle across her lawn to destroy a column of ants and asking her if she knew what it'd do to the grass, which obviously subsequently died, leaving a visible reminder of her folly for weeks afterwards.
At the time she was a deputy head in the other secondary school where we lived and it was one of the first times I realised that adults can be .. a bit daft.
.
This was after I asked her husband why he always slightly squeezed the fizzy pop bottle before tightening the cap. "To keep it's fizz" he responded. I knew that definitely wasn't right.

Anyway, if you still want kids, or have kids around - watch out for borax. If you're not bothered, go crazy with that shit.

Keep it up with Terro bait traps outside the house. Eventually they’ll get the queen(s).
- We had a bad invasion two years ago that lasted months. The whole summer. This summer, nothing. It worksmonospaced

This worked for us... and its kinda eco friendly. We found where there were getting in... and built a little wall of cinnamon powder around the area.
Apparently it messes with the chemicals they use to communicate, and they hate walking through it. Won't kill the nest, but it might just make it too inconvenient for them to enter you house.

close the entrances they use.
clean their streets with bleach. this destroys any chemical trace they left behind and they 'forget' about it.
