My father in law just gave me a box with thousands this week. All 20-30 years old or more. What should I look for?

^Looking for any Jordan cards, lebron, kobe especially rookies.
If there's any hidden vintage (babe ruth, mickey mantles, jackie robinson)
I might buy them from you if they are for sale.
- I’ll take a look and see if any big names pop out. It’s all in sealed plastic bins. :) thanks.monospaced

Crazy how the card game has picked back up; Pokemon i guess leading the way with 500,000 charizard cards and what not.
My brothers and I collected in the early 90's BUT of course the real value comes years before that.
I miss the buying / selling / valuation of the hobby AND the organizing of old, new, mint, common, etc. cards.
Cheers to paper-based hobbies! Cards, comic books et all!
: )
- Sports cards seems to be my favorite since they take up less space.pinkfloyd

- Just took a photo. All from 91-92. All unopened.monospaced
- Love how they are still sealed. The cards during that era was mass produced so there's too much supply for much value.pinkfloyd
- I'm pretty sure your father in law has some gold mines.pinkfloyd
- Figured. I don’t know if I should open anything. Haha.monospaced

I have a binder full of Nolan Ryans from when i was a kid. I heard sports cards aren’t worth what we all thought they’d be worth back then
- A Nolan Ryan rookie is worth a good amount. The rest not much.pinkfloyd
- I was super into baseball cards at the time and Nolan was my boy. I must have been around 10 years old. Collection here: https://imgur.com/a/…scarabin
- I fucked that up. Link is https://imgur.com/a/…scarabin
- Lots of Nolans, don't see anything that's worth a good amount unless I missed something.pinkfloyd
- Yeah, nothing from ‘68scarabin

I actually just got back into it. I collected when I was a kid (so late 80s, early 90s). It's been fun to learn what's new about the hobby.
So far a lot of NFL Prizm, and I went wild on the NBA Hoops Premium Stock stuff.
- I have a bunch of these 85 Topps NFL - which were my favorite designs. Going to send these for grading soon. https://imgur.com/5p…mathinc

I made “internet trading cards” years and years ago, with notable pic of the day / meme type shit on them

I have a couple hundred cards from the 80's. All Topps and Fleer from the bubble gum packets. I'm pretty sure it's all garbage though. They made way too many of these in the 80s to be rare.

I was obsessed with baseball cards (and baseball in general) as a kid. I got a handful left, but nothing too valuable. Unfortunately most of my cards were stolen out of my dad's house when I was in college. The upside of that was that I made an insurance claim and got a check for probably more than the entire collection was worth.
I still occasionally buy cards, but only for personal/sentimental reasons. Not for investment or profit.
I mean, my team is the Padres. So, like, nobody wants those cards :)

- Remarkably, the robbers in mentioned in my post above left that TG plaque hanging on the wall of my bedroom. I've had that card for nearly 30 years now.nocomply
- The Gwynn card is iconic.pinkfloyd
- Wait. Maybe over 30 years. Whatever. It's my crown jewel.nocomply
- Tatis rookie was in a giveaway pack of cards at a game 2 seasons ago.nocomply

^ short story about the Padres.
When they were building the new park, Tony Gwynn was doing signings downtown. So I bought a ball and a case, went down to the park to meet him. Steve Finley and the third base coach were also there. When I met Tony, I handed him the ball to sign. Instead of giving it back, he handed to Steve to sign, and so on. What am I gonna even say in that situation? No, Steve, please don't sign my ball. I only care about Tony. I just kept my mouth shut.
- Ha! Well, at least he didn't hand it to Sean Burroughs or Rubin Rivera, etc.nocomply

Regarding Tony Gwynn and autographs... Around 1991 he was doing a signing at the Costco (then Price Club) on Morena.
My dad took my brother and I to get his autograph. We brought baseballs to have him sign, but he said he said he wasn't allowed to sign them. He said he could only sign the stack of 8x10 No Fear branded mini posters on the table, and gave my brother and I each a couple of those. (Yes, No Fear!)
But he told us he was almost done signing and if we wait with our baseballs outside he'd sign them for us too.
My dad (a huge baseball fan) started chatting up Tony. He said, "I grew up in Pittsburgh watching Roberto Clemente, and I never saw him go 5-for-5. But I've seen you do it in person twice."
Tony thought my dad was pulling his leg, so he jokingly quizzed him. "Oh yeah, what season? Who were we playing"
My Dad was stumped for a minute and then said, "Wait, one of them was in the early spring and you didn't get your 5th hit until the 10th inning!"
Without missing a beat Tony said, "The Dodgers!" and we all started laughing.
Tony signed our baseballs and also posed for a photo with us, which has been lost for years now.
That guy was a true class act.
