This is what happens when you out source to India.
You pay. You hired them.
Perhaps them not 'hitting the mark' is because you've not been good at briefing them or giving them feedback? To be fair, this is more their fault in not teasing out the details from their client.
'hitting the mark'... I hope you didn't say to them. What action can they execute in order for the work to hit the mark for you?
Try breaking down the misgivings you have with their work into tangible, actionable amends that they can make. At least then you can steer them towards something you're happy with.
- lol @ assuming it’s outsourced to India. Wtf dude?monospaced

QBN is so triggered by this thread! lol

Assuming this is a real post, this is why you should always work under a contract. Sometimes, for any number of reasons, it just doesn't work out. The contract will have a payment structure laid out that accounts for all of these outcomes. x% at deliverable 1, y% and deliverable 2 etc... with an outlined "kill fee" should the project not work out.
Again, assuming this is a good will post, I believe the ethical thing to do is to pay the percentage based on where you are in the project, and always work from a contract going forward.
- < this. Not having a contract is amateur hour both for the OP and their designer. Just pay up and move along.ben_

That's why you have interns before hire. Modern day slavery. You would be surprised what kind of talent you can find for free. But if they are good you keep them and pay them well!

Why don't share the art work that hasn't hit the mark?
- imbecile3
Bindegal, is that you?
- I was thinking the same thing.utopian

Without knowing the details, pay and move on. It's only fair. Sounds like you are dealing with someone with limited experience. They should have requested a portion of money upfront to start.
- nb4
Fuck you guys I don't pay for anything unless it hits the mark.
Dinner out, fries too salty. I skip out on the check.
Taxi ride home, driver took a weird way. I bail and run off.
Got a haircut, mediocre fade. Bolt outta there.
Went to a movie, didn't love the plot. Stole a chair on my way out.

My gut is telling me that you are the problem. You sound like the type of client that I would fire. The type of client that could never be satisfied because they have no idea what they want.
• Are you selling widgets?
• Where did you hire this designer?
• How much did you pay this designer?
• How many ideas/concepts did he create?
• How many ideas/concepts did you expect?Pay the designer for their time and move on....try Fiverr if you are cheap and clueless. You can get a gazillion ideas for like 5 bucks on Fiverr.
- All those fiverrr "ideas" are ripped from somebody elses folio lolgrafician
- omahadesigns1
You hired them? Hiring means you pay them.
How do you let someone work for that long if you don't like it?
- _niko3
A graphic designer working on a small project for months means that if they don't get paid, they don't eat. They could have spent that time working on other projects or hustling for new ones.
To pull the rug out from under them at the 11th hour after months of work seems sort of shitty. Did you check in at shorter intervals? 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month etc? were targets still not being hit?
This also sounds like a small paying gig that they've worked way too many hours on, what's the rate when all is said and done? $5/hour?
shit like this is so soul crushing. Not saying the graphic designer isn't at fault but try to find a happy middle ground.

if you order a sandwich from a menu and they make you that sandwich, do you pay, or do you walk away saying it's not what you wanted?
- What if they make it really bad though, and it doesn't even taste good?monospaced
- What if it tastes good but just not quite hitting the mark of what you wanted.nb
- not off the menu, more like a custom-made sandwich. It's on you if your ingredient choices suck. or if you're vague and say just make me something kick-ass/_niko
- you chose to order from this deli, so you pay and after that you go order somewhere elseKrassy
- Yeah what if you decide after taking a couple bites you wanted extra jalapenos and a squirt of sub sauce? Do you have to pay for every dang thing?ben_
- Avocado is $1 extra!Krassy
- But I took two bites, 10% of the sandwich is gone, so I'm willing to pay 75¢ okay?ben_
- but wait a minute, Krassy in what bizarro world do you exist that Avocado is only $1 extra?ben_
- $1 / tiny slice of avocadoKrassy
- ah you sneaky sandwich artist.ben_
