I thought it was pretty great, but required two viewings to really properly grasp what was happening.

Also, the main character is played by John David Washington, who is Denzel Washington's son, which blows my mind. Two generations doing action films at the same time.

Watched the first 15 min. Understood absolutely nothing

    • The explain the beginning at the end and they explain the end at the beginningnb

Finally watched it. Pretty fucking great for an action movie. Much better than Inception!

Would love to see this in IMAX some day.

    • yeah, i really enjoyed it. i think the Nolan hype really hurts films like this. If it was from some no-name director people would be wetting themselveshardhat

    • Anyway I watched it yesterday and then thought about it for a while and then watched a couple scenes again, including the end "battle" to catch the subtleties.nb
    • Y you out watched it last year too.monospaced
    • Better than Inception?? Fuck offbabydick
    • Inception is corny. I didn’t see Tenet this week, I watched The Net thonb

I actually watched it again, and it is even better second time around. You get so much more out of it and the layers of action going on in the background.

The relationship between Pattison and JD Washington is more nuanced second time around when you know what's coming in the film.

Totally elevates on another go around!

    • I prob should do this. I mean, what was the painting heist even about?inteliboy
    • The drawing? It was a way for the protagonist to get close to Sator i think !DaveO

I ignored this movie when it came out because of all the general disappointment i saw scattered about the internet - I remember seeing "interstellar" opening night and being hugely disappointed and so I let this one pass.

Gotta say, huge mistake. Should have gone to a drive-thru. This movie kills it. It's a perfect modern summer blockbuster. Fun as shit, just enough weird to keep you engaged, and the visuals are just stunning.

I don't think John David Washington was the best choice for this role though, his delivery on the writing feels non-native, and a lot of the human interaction is very mechanical. Nolan obviously lacks heart but he never has been able to make any sort of human connection in his films.

This shit rules though and in one of those backwards-ass realities we get a whole slew of these timefuck episodes.

    • Be interested to know what bits disappointed you about interstellar?Ianbolton
    • Nolan doesn’t lack heart. That isn’t obvious. And interstellar is the shit!monospaced

Alright here we go. Watched last night, at home on my average setup.

**Light spoilers and controversial opinions below**

Overall I actually agree with both the positive and negative commentary.

I think its both great and flawed at the same time and someone on here said that it might have worked better as a TV series and I think thats a super idea.

I left it feeling like i'd not seen enough of the world they created and to be honest even though there's lots of exposition, I still wanted to know more about the future world and how that actually would play out.

    BULL
Concept was awesome, really good spin on espionage genre stuff and complex enough that you could grasp what was going on but still kept you thinking after the credits started. I know Nolan had been rumoured to make a Bond movie but i think he's already made two so far. There was a shred of environmental morality in it that I liked too, the idea that we'd ruined the world and it needed to be fixed...

Action was great, felt tangible and not too magical / impossible. If all of that was in camera then you can see where that budget went, all of it on the screen.

Location work was amazing, that Amalfi coast shit had my travel itch at full tilt.

Score was good, a a bit annoying over the long dialog scenes but I can imagine it really kicks in a theater.

Reverse / Inverse effect was a bit daft at times but when there was action running forwards and smoke / particles going backwards it was really effective

John David Washington's wardrobe, fucking incredible.

    BEAR

I'd say it moved so fast that some of the concept / lore got lost. When Inception came out i think everyone scoffed at the Ellen / Elliot Page character who was basically an exposition vehicle, but i think his films need that early on so everyone can understand the rules and the stakes.

The dialog. So cheesy in parts, and lines that look okay on the page came over really clumsy. Not sure we needed two comic relief characters (JDW and Pattinson).

Yes Nolan we know you can get Michael Caine. He didn't sound his best in this, maybe you should let him retire.

I'd say there was a bit too much heavy action for me, I would rather have had some more dialog that built out the world and explored it.

There also wasn't much of an emotional resonance in this that his other films had. Interstellar (the idea of aging against your kids and the relationship with them), and inception (not being able to let go of your past mistakes) had way more in this and while i thought it was melodramatic at the time, i miss it.

I didn't care at all for the female lead or her son. Some of his other movies have had string female characters, this one was a bit blokey 'damsel in distress' and felt SO trite in 2020.

Does Russia get mad when all western movies portray them as mental rich tyrants? Or are they cool with it?

    *****

I'm happy to eat my words above on the movie but I think its sad that Nolan rejected the streaming / TV idea. It'd be a waste if they didn't do a sequel to this or expanded the universe some more.

I'd love it if there was a budget cap on his next project to get back to some of that Memento / Insomnia kind of feeling. His ideas on humanity are so clever and thoughtful and they get drowned out in blazing action scenes for the spectacle of it all.

The movie industry is really missing a slate of well made, grown up human drama pieces at the moment and i feel like he could do something ace in that genre. His first film 'Following' was this great paranoid Dostoevsky-esque piece that is so effective – imagine what he could do with a limited scope.

4/5 popcorns for me. I'll definitely be rewatching and i can imagine it'll be rewarding to go over it again and take in some of the more complex elements with a base of knowledge. Top thursday night!

    • RE: Russians being stereotypes. The English are similarly stereotyped as baddies in US movies. I'm fine with it, because they make good fucking films. LOLHayzilla
  • dibec0

I liked it. Classical Nolan. He lifted elements off his old movies and tossed into a time blender.

    • Can someone tell directors that time blenders and complicating things aren’t always that fun for the audience. Just sayinmonospaced
    • I’ll probably buy it :)monospaced
    • I have more of an issue with sound and dialogue. Nolan makes it hard by having Ludwig Göransson going fu*king nuts on the score. Missed Hans on this one.dibec
    • I heard about that. I have a home theater capable of reference levels, totally calibrated and sound treated. Hopefully I can make it work.monospaced
    • Point I’m making is that I hear you need a theater to hear the dialog. He didn’t make this for people using TVs and sound bars.monospaced
    • Totally. I don't know if it is aging, the movie, or my sound system. Would love to know if you experience a similar issue.dibec
    • It’s 100% the movie. Nolan WANTS people to be silent and strain to hear. He argues it makes you pay more attention. And he wants sound to be incredibly loud.monospaced
    • So once you turn down the volume so your ears don’t bleed, you can’t hear dialog. The home theater groups whine about this all day long.monospaced
    • lol. He sure does that with British accents and wicked synth drops over critical dialogue. Mad fu*kery mate.dibec
    • hehe, if u got a proper DTS system the sound will be nice :) i enjoy his movies for years because of this, and tenet is no excusested
    • the dtshd-ma sound on the bd disc is awesome.sted
    • currently running 7.1 ATMOS. Might try different processing and see if I enjoy it more on the next round. Though I have been really loving the ATMOS sound.dibec

It's clear that the main character has a larger team supporting his efforts. My biggest question was how did they deal with the logistics of hauling around his 15-20 handsome man outfits? And who the fuck was in charge of gently untucking his shirt to reveal just the right amount of belt?

  • nb3

Ok, just watched it. Surprised at all the hype, didn't see much worth discussing even. Overall a pretty basic techno-thriller kind of a hacker movie. Script was silly. Saving grace was that Sandra Bullock did what she could with the starring role. But still.

  • babydick0

I wanted to give this flick a second chance and see it again... but fuck no. It's just a movie that presents a super interesting concept in a very uninteresting way.

The final shoot-out was so fucking lame, looked like some amateur cinematographers shit, but they had more than two friends to help and shoot the action stuff.

The music is great. That's it.

    • They should just cut it in 5 pieces and make a TV series out of it.NBQ00
  • GuyFawkes0

not sure if IMAX has a different edit (was the version i watched) but there was some really bad cuts in this fuckin' flick, overall i dug it but damn, some scenes it felt like a shot was just forced in by the execs.

I think The Warner Brothers / HBO fallout (as well as the meagre returns from Tenet) will give him a total a market correction.

He's low key being blamed for the complete crash in the theaters because they opened up too early, and now (maybe as a result) the entire slate of WB's 2021 releases are going to HBO Max. Kind of wild that he's been a huge ticket for Warner Brothers and they've really stabbed him in the back but the reality, is that everyone is watching stuff at home and he needs to get with it.

I love him and his work but i can't believe someone with so much influence could be so willfully arrogant to assume that their film is more important than a global health crisis.

Not seen Tenet yet but it feels like the headline is that it's okay but hard to get into, slightly derivative of other work and essentially a bit bloated as a result of a man with too much power.

I was digging into Steven Sodebergh's career this weekend and he's been ahead of the curve with movies for TV / streamers etc and generally using the medium as a way to experiment with getting things to people. Similarly with Fincher and Netflix. Even the Coen brothers say that their work only really reached a broad audience because of VHS....

    • You're kinda wrong. Nolan doesn't compromise. He actually bought and destroyed the airplane in the movie. Not his fault the distribution was in a pandemic year.grafician
    • also the movie is a solid 8/10. It's really not a low IQ movie by any standards like anything comic books based.grafician
    • I haven't seen Tenet. But, imagine if Dunkirk had not been released in theatre. You would make the movie ENTIRELY differently if it wasn't going to be in cinemanb
    • Another movie that shares this is Gravity. Ever watch Gravity at home? It's boring and derivative. But in 3D IMAX it's super fun. Like a space ride!nb
    • also keep in mind that the "cinema" is THE medium, streaming on the internet is just a bonus...grafician
    • Nolan is completed overrated and full of himself and Inception 2 blows ass.utopian
    • I don't think he feels his movie is "more important" than a health crisis. But it's art that he wants people to see in the right way, regardless of profits.nb
    • I'm talking to DaveO not nb btwgrafician
    • @nb well watch the film first and have an opinion about it later will you?grafician
    • Yes, I will have an opinion laternb
    • I know he doesn't compromise but i feel like it was unethical for WB to release a movie that heralded the reopening of theaters at a time when its unsafe.DaveO
    • On the other side of the house Apple/ Netflix offered to buy the bond movie for $500M and the studio said no.DaveO
    • Since having kids i find it REALLY difficult to get out and watch movies even in a normal time, so paying to watch stuff at home is all there is.DaveO
    • To be honest if Apple released the new bond movie on Christmas day I'd happily pay $40 to watch itDaveO

I’m expecting this to be similar to Inception: lazy script, corny AF, b-grade action movie with a-grade effects and cinematography.

Interstellar and Dunkirk are his best work.

    • his Batman movies are great tooBennn
    • True, I appreciate his contribution to the Batman genrenb
    • What about The Prestige? Thats still my favorite of his films.helloeatbreathedrive
    • And Memento? Come on!!Ianbolton
    • Memento is amazingBennn
    • Insomnia is fucking good tooDaveO
    • Memento is a great indie pic. Great script. Insomnia is solid, too. They don't suffer from the Nolan style that ruins his bigger pictures.nb
    • Tenet was a frustrating watch for me....jagara
    • Ditto.helloeatbreathedrive
    • I loved inception tho.inteliboy
    • i tried it for 10 minutes, switched to netflix.api
    • Insomnia was fantastic too!dibec
    • Insomnia is great, but it was also a remake of the great original 1997 Norwegian film.evilpeacock
  • spl33nidoru0

^ I wanted to stop it after 45min, couldn’t stand how precious and self-indulging everything was. Also the constant scientific gibberish.
Worth watching til the end though, can’t say I liked it but it gets better in the second half as the time thing gets progressively more vertiginous.

    • Also these characters are impossible to care about or relate to, it’s all so straight-faced and their bond is superficial and meaningless.spl33nidoru
  • NBQ000

The first 10min were good. Then I had problems getting past the 30min mark. Need to continue there and see if I can finish it. So far I think the soundtrack seems better than the movie.

The War With Grandpa topples Tenet's box office lead with $3.6 million.

    • Numbers are irrelevant considering the context, sharing them today would certainly make the film look like a flop, but it will be in theatres until NYEspl33nidoru

My friend Ryan works with Chris Nolan on all his movies. He needed back surgery after Tenet because he’s been lugging around an iMax camera for years

    • Thought you were going to write lugging around Chris Nolan’s nuts lol_niko
