I debated posting but feel like I need to say something.
This morning I got a call from my best friend's sister. He took his life on Friday night. He had been going through a lot (divorce, job loss, stopping drinking, etc.) for the past 1.5 years. We had been going on long walks a few times a week and shared some pretty deep conversations.
We've been friends since we were 15 and I just helped him move into a place a block away. He was a brilliant man with a heart of gold. His demons, however, won in the end. He tried everything he could find to help himself from several great therapists to micro-dosing. I thought things were looking better and had been looking forward to spring walks and deep, intellectual conversations about everything. Now I'll be cherishing those walks we did have and how much we shared this last year.
My point of the post is that while he was a "man" (former hotshot, stubborn tough-guy, etc.), we almost always gave each other a hug when parting ways, even when we'd see each other the next day. The warmth and love in those hugs was amazingly powerful.
Hug someone today. Hug them deeply, share your warmth and feel theirs. Doesn't matter if it's a man, woman, child or animal. Everything can feel that love. Share it, appreciate those moments you have with those you care about.
Life is fleeting. Be grateful for having others to share what time we do have on this Earth.
A case of La Croix he brought over on Thursday to repay me for all the seltzers we'd drink after the walks sits downstairs on my counter...cheers, buddy, I know you've finally found peace.

The world is a place, and some people don't feel they fit in it anymore. It's incredibly sad when people leave this way, but also good to hear how they impacted others in a positive way. A friend of ours battled something similar for years and their journey was very different before the end. Thanks for sharing.
