Great move Brazil electing someone who doesn't believe in global warming and who thinks burning down the rainforest is actually a good thing.

"Bolsonaro, who has told people, supposedly ironically, to call him “Captain Chainsaw,” campaigned on the theory that his country’s economic development had been limited by the world’s affection for the Amazon, and he made clear that those who wanted to cut it down had little to fear from his administration. He even fired the head of the federal agency tasked with monitoring by satellite the extent of deforestation, when he found that deforestation was increasing."
- This is what people voted for. The stupidity out there is mind boggling sometimes...yuekit
- It's not at all surprising in a country where almost 30% of the people are in poverty.ben_
- someone comes along promising a better life and people hear what they want. Seems vaguely familiar actually.ben_
- I don't think it can all be explained by poor people being duped. You have to account for the radical right-wing that nominated these people in the first place.yuekit
- so is it stupid voters or not?fadein11
- yeukit, yeah I'm sure not disputing that it's multi-faceted. But promising jobs and prosperity is aimed at the poor.ben_

"As of August 16, 2019, satellite observations indicated that total fire activity in the Amazon basin was slightly below average in comparison to the past 15 years".
- Hmmm OTOH this says it's almost twice the amount vs. last year.
https://abcnews.go.c…yuekit - Mm, I know - there's a lot of that going around in the media, which is why i thought it interesting to see a counter from a scienceytingNairn
- Obviously I'm not in favour of burning the rain forests or a great fan of Bolsonaro, but I do wonder if there's an element of manipulation going onNairn
- Have to direct our money to the proper channels if that's the game.CGN
- Hmmm OTOH this says it's almost twice the amount vs. last year.

i mean in terms of brazil you should read up on the intercept's reporting on how basically the president who would have been was ousted / jailed by a right-wing coalition of judges and opponents and basically a litany of prosecutions were levied against left-leaning figures of brazil's upper class.
it's not the fault of the people of brazil, it was an operation that was designed by the right to coalesce power among a few extremists and they got what they wanted
- chapo trap house did a good interview with glenn greenwald about all of this (who is under constant threat because of his reporting)colin_s
