I just got a new laptop so I'm reconsidering how I back things up.
Never used iCloud, but I should. Not really sure how it works.
With my old computer, I just had it plugged to an external drive when I was home and it automatically backed things up in Time Machine.
And I plugged my phone in and backed up manually in iTuned when I thought of it.
How often do you back up your phone? What should I do differently?

You can have it back up to iCloud. If you want a brainless, simple way of backups, it its great. But, im sure you have gigs of stuff. This means that you would probably be paying for 2TB storage ($10 month), which is actually pretty cheap compared to others. You cal also access your stuff form all your devices.
Just turn it on in system preferences....
- Carbonite is about half that cost for unlimited backupformed

I have around 500gb of files.

iCloud makes the native Apple apps backup easy (iTunes, Photos, phone stuff), but it's not cost effective as a serious backup tool.
I'd go with Backblaze or similar (in addition to a requisite Time Machine drive)

I don't trust this cloud-stuff. It's just someone else's computer.
But don't listen to me, I'm oldschool.- You gotta have both. I just had a RAID setup die. Something can always go wrong everywhere. I wouldn't rely on the cloud, though.formed

I use iCloud to back up everything. 2TB plan. I know there are cheaper and prob better plans elsewhere but for what I need, which is essentially access to files and off-mac storage it works well, esp with phone, tablet etc...Can be a little slow to download things at times.
